Cropped or full-length? It sounds like a simple question, but the answer changes depending on what you're training, how you're built, and where you're headed after class. This guide cuts through the noise and tells you exactly which legging length to reach for — and why.
The Lengths Explained
Full-length (ankle): Hits at or just above the ankle. The most versatile cut — works for every sport, every season, every body type. High-waist construction sits 25–30 cm above the hip. Best for cold-weather training, running, and any workout where you want maximum coverage.
7/8 length (cropped): Ends 5–8 cm above the ankle, showing a sliver of skin and the top of the shoe. Slightly more elevated styling option. Best for Pilates, Barre, Lagree, and warm-weather workouts where the instructor needs to see your lower-leg positioning.
Capri / 3/4 length: Ends mid-calf. Less common in premium activewear now but useful for high-heat environments, cycling, and studios where you want airflow without going fully bare.
Choosing by Sport
Yoga & Pilates: The 7/8 cropped length is the clear favourite. It shows enough of the ankle for the instructor to check alignment, stays out of the way during inversions, and has a polished enough finish to wear off the mat. See our Leo Leggings Guide — the cropped Leo version is consistently one of our top-performing Pilates choices.
Running: Full-length wins in cooler weather (the extra coverage reduces wind exposure). In summer, the 7/8 is equally valid — the slight leg exposure actually helps with temperature regulation.
HIIT & strength training: Either length works. Full-length provides slightly more coverage and feels more contained during dynamic movements. Cropped is easier to pair with compression socks if you use them.
Studio cycling / spin: Cropped or capri — you want minimal fabric around the ankle to avoid catching on the pedal clip. The HEY HONEY cropped styles with a flat ankle band are ideal.
Swimming / surf / outdoor: Full-length for UV coverage, capri for warm water or paddleboarding.
Choosing by Body Type
If you want to elongate the leg: Full-length, full stop. The unbroken line from hip to ankle creates the longest possible visual leg. If you choose cropped, pair with a shoe in the same tonal range as your skin to avoid the cut-off effect.
If you want to show off your calves: 7/8 cropped. The ankle exposure draws attention to the narrowest part of the lower leg.
If you're petite: Full-length or 7/8 — avoid capri/3/4 lengths as they cut the leg at a point that visually shortens the lower leg. A shoe with a slightly elevated sole helps. More on this in our waist height guide.
If you're tall: You can carry all three lengths easily. Cropped tends to look particularly good because you have the inseam length to absorb the shortening effect.
Choosing by Season
Full-length wins in autumn and winter — coverage matters when the studio is cold or you're training outdoors. In spring and summer, the cropped 7/8 is the go-to. It reads as deliberately lighter rather than just shorter, especially in lighter colorways.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 7/8 leggings and capri leggings?
7/8 leggings end just above the ankle — typically 5–8 cm above — showing a narrow strip of skin and the top of the shoe. Capri or 3/4 leggings end mid-calf, leaving more of the lower leg exposed. The 7/8 is the more versatile and flattering length for most women: it elongates the leg more than the capri while still offering the breathability and style of the cropped silhouette.
Are cropped leggings good for Pilates?
Yes — the 7/8 cropped legging is particularly well-suited for Pilates, Barre, and Lagree. The ankle exposure helps instructors see your lower-leg alignment and footwork, which is important for precise technique. It also prevents extra fabric from bunching during footwork or footbar exercises. HEY HONEY's cropped leggings use the same squat-proof, high-waist construction as the full-length styles.
Do cropped leggings make you look shorter?
They can, if you choose the wrong length or shoe. A capri/3/4 length that cuts at mid-calf can shorten the visual leg line. A 7/8 cropped legging that hits just above the ankle minimises this effect. The fix: pair cropped leggings with a shoe in a similar tone to your skin, or choose a shoe with a slightly elevated sole. Full-length leggings are always the most elongating option.
Which legging length is best for running?
Full-length in cooler weather for wind and cold protection. In summer, 7/8 cropped leggings work just as well and the slight ankle exposure helps with temperature regulation. Avoid capri/3/4 for long-distance running — the mid-calf hem can rub and the reduced coverage matters more on longer efforts.
